Just a note on current events and events yet to come.
Dad finally stopped suffering on Thursday, September 13th, at 12:05 PM
(central). We're doing OK and we're just happy that he's not in pain
anymore. There's been a tremendous (and surprising) outpouring of
support here locally, so we're all going to be alright.
I want
to thank all of you for the good thoughts you've given me these last few
months while this has been going on and I apologize if I ever got
monomaniacal about it. The next week will be spent preparing for the
Celebration Service (next Sunday), but I should be able to return with a
set for next Friday (9-21-12).
I had considered doing a set
tonight, but the last couple of days have made me incredibly tired (and,
oddly, unable to sleep long stretches at a time). Everyone has said,
"If there's anything I can do," but right now, the best thing you can do
is not be sad. The family had time to prepare for this and we've said
our good-byes. Yeah, it's a loss, but it's one we saw coming a long
time.
I've already done my soul-searching (or whatever) over at
Live Journal (lolotehe.livejournal.com) and I'm OK with where things
stand now. The world isn't going to stop turning and life will go on.
Dad dedicated his life to the written word and the
ability of others
to receive it. So as long as there are people who can read or understand
what they read or listen to someone read to them, I can't consider him
truly dead.
Or, you can go with Dad's favorite quote from H.L. Mencken (born September 12th, 1880):
“If,
after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to
please my ghost, forgive some sinner and wink your eye at some homely
girl.”
